Job Purpose:

The Peer Support Specialist position works 20 hours per week with the Assertive Community Treatment team in all locations.  The purpose of this job to support patients as advocates within the community, assist in linkage, referrals and housing as needed.  The peer support specialist assists patients in identifying and building social skills that will facilitate and support their desire for recovery.  This position educates patients on behavioral health wellness strategies and empowers individuals and families to achieve their health goals.  This position helps bridge communications between patients and providers by working in collaboration with ACT Staff in providing peer support to patients.  This position operates within the spirit and structure of an advocate and makes appropriate patient referrals as needed, including but not limited to Emergency Services personnel.  

Position Qualifications:

  • Peer services are delivered by people with the lived experience and must be, or have been a client of mental health services, or is or has been a caretaker of minor child that has received mental health services. 
  • A Peer Support Specialist is a person who has progressed in their own recovery and is willing to self-identify as a peer and work to help others with chemical dependency or a mental disorder.
  • Because of their life experience, such persons have expertise that professional training cannot replicate.
  • Must have proof of a minimum high school diploma or GED. 
  • Knowledge of behavioral and health issues as well as strategies which contribute to wellness.  Experience and/or interest in providing peer support to patients within our 5 county areas 
  • Annual Flu immunization by Nov 1, annual TB screening, current CPI training and BLS certification required. 

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:

  • Culturally proficient, effective communicator, organized, mature, ethical, reliable, adaptable, creative, self-motivated, enthusiastic team member, and commitment to optimal wellness.
  • Working knowledge of patient confidentiality and use of protected health information.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computer applications to include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Internet navigation.
  • Ability to relate in a supportive and non-judgmental manner with persons in distress.
  • Ability to follow established universal precautions and report potential exposure to a communicable disease immediately.
  • Ability to provide appropriate and responsible role model through actions and appearance.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including calculator, copy machine, fax and multi-line telephone.  Interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a sometimes hectic environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must have current driver’s license and ability to be commercially insured and maintain a driving record that allows insurability with AHS commercial insurance agency.
