Job Purpose:

The purpose of the job is to provide emotional support and advocate effective recovery based services for our crisis clients. The ideal Peer Specialist will support clients, mobile crisis therapist and team members during the crisis evaluation and assist with client’s stabilization; providing support for clients in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy, stigma busting and assisting clients in regaining control over their recovery process. They will assist with connecting clients to community resources and support the families of adults, children and youth in navigating these systems.

Position Qualifications:

  • Peer services are delivered by people with the lived experience and must be, or have been a client of mental health services, or is or has been a caretaker of minor child that has received mental health services. 
  • Peer Support Specialist is a person who has progressed in their own recovery and is willing to self-identify as a peer and work to help others with chemical dependency or a mental disorder. Because of their life experience, such persons have expertise that professional training cannot replicate.
  • Must have proof of a minimum high school diploma or GED. 
  • Knowledge of behavioral and health issues as well as strategies which contribute to wellness. Experience and/or interest in providing peer support to patients within our 5 county areas 
  • Annual Flu immunization by Nov 1, annual TB screening, current CPI training and BLS certification required. 

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities:

  • Culturally proficient, effective communicator, organized, mature, ethical, reliable, adaptable, creative, self-motivated, enthusiastic team member, and commitment to optimal wellness.
  • Working knowledge of patient confidentiality and use of protected health information.
  • Working knowledge of Windows based computer applications to include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and Internet navigation.
  • Ability to relate in a supportive and non-judgmental manner with persons in distress.
  • Ability to follow established universal precautions and report potential exposure to a communicable disease immediately.
  • Ability to provide appropriate and responsible role model through actions and appearance.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including calculator, copy machine, fax and multi-line telephone.  Interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload in a sometimes hectic environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must have current driver’s license and ability to be commercially insured and maintain a driving record that allows insurability with AHS commercial insurance agency.
  • Creative problem solver and must be able to work as and with a team.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work to achieve the mission and goals of the crisis program and agency.
  • Ability to use supervision to enhance own performance.
